Shetland-Orkneyinga Saga
of Jarl Michael Whitebeard "The Lost"
Being the tales and recordings of an ageing Yorkshireman and his travels around the islands of Scotland. His adventures begin this year in the northern archipelagos of Shetland and Orkney and will continue in future years as he continues his wanderings in the Kingdom of the Man & the Isles.
The Isle of Man was the most southerly of the islands included in the Kingdom of Man & the Isles.
The Shetlands, my first port-of-call, was the most northerly. The largest of the Shetland Isles is Mainland and is approximately 70 miles long. This makes it about twice the length of the Isle of Man so I've given myself about two weeks to explore before heading over to Yell & Unst.
I am working my way through a couple of guides and a full set of OS maps.
I am accompanied on my travels by my Land Rover Defender. The Land Rover contains all I should need for months away from home and acts as a caravan if B&Bs or my tent will not suffice.
The necessities of life include, of course, a fine selection of books covering most of my hobbies and interests along with a number of solo-playable board games.
